Inner Space, a series of mixed media paintings, confronts issues about what aspects of our psyche we have conscious access to versus what's hidden from us.
Having been in a heavily dissociative state for most of my life as a result of developmental trauma, many of my internal states have been "blocked out" from me. Rejoining with my own feeling states has been a process full of confusion, elation and everything in between. In this body of work I aim to show the nature of that reacquaintance. Spray painted areas obscure layers beneath. Abrupt splatters, strong black marks and gestural strokes punctuate an otherwise harmonious composition and soft palette.
I created these pieces by working in layers, starting with a translucent acrylic pour, then moving on to mark making and spray paint, often repeating the process over until the desire balance of concealed v. revealed was achieved. Unlike previous work, I chose not to source any visual inspiration from nature, but relied only on my own feeling-based experiences to inform the marks, shapes and colors. In the process I discovered that the internal experience presents much like a terrain of its own-- many of compositions took on a landscape-like form, and there are elements in the work that could be seen as related to the ocean, sky, earth and cosmos.
